The free standing canopy was the result of a national competition to design a meeting place for local people in the heart of Middlesbrough.

The enamel toughened glass is suspended on steel cables and contains a large image of Vulcan, the God of fire and forge, as a
reference to the industrial heritage of this steel town in the north of England.
